Lyrics and Notes

1. LOVE HATE CITY
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Western

Kevin Tarlton & Norm Quesnel / Backing Vocals

I’ve been living here all my life
There’s a fork in the road but it looks like a knife
And it’s made for dividing these streets in two

You can look back when the bridge burns down
Cuz there’s more than one way out of this town
Don’t know all the back roads but I know a few

You get what you pay for
That’s what they say

Why do I hate this city
Why do I love this city
Why do I want this city
Why do I need this city why do I bleed this city
Why do I hate
I hate this city I love
I love this city I need
I bleed this city
The sign post on the road says you’re in love hate city

His foot is in his mouth and it’s kicking up a storm
Now the gamblers’ in town and the dice are getting warm
My glass is half empty and I need a fill

There’s beautiful land for miles all around
I’ll sell you anything that isn’t nailed down
Where there’s a way there’s always a will

You get what you pay for
That’s what they say

CHORUS
SOLO

Take me to your leader. Take me to em right now x4
CHORUS

2. DO NOT FEED THE WOLVES
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Action

I can hear them scratching at the bottom of my door
I was told not to feed them or they would come back for more
So they came in numbers even though my scraps were stale
They would keep on scratching every morning without fail

All my life they have been taking from my hand
Now it’s time to starve them I don’t know if I can

I can’t refuse this hunger any longer
Try not to feed them but the feeling is getting stronger

I cannot keep dealing with the damage to my door
I tried to use a kick plate but the higher they would go
I tried to use the back door they were waiting for me there
I had to leave the only little scraps that I could spare

All my life they have been taking from my hand
Now it’s time to starve them I don’t know if I can

I can’t refuse this hunger any longer
Try not to feed them but the feeling is getting stronger

In these times of anger the hunger calls
Screaming for mercy to swallow them all
Now I’ve got a lot of anger and a little self control
It’s a never ending nightmare for your ever hungry soul

Do Not Feed the Wolves x 8

3. THE DEVIL IS COMING
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Thriller

If you see an opportunity you take it
A lifetime of experience to make it
Just a moment of your time to really break it
There’s nothing you can do

A cloud of thunder creeps across the sky
You see it from the corner of your eye
You are hoping it will pass you by
There’s nothing you can do
Tonight it comes for you

The Devil is coming to get you in the morning
The Devil is coming to get you in the morning
The Devil is coming to get you without warning
And there’s nothing you can do

The wisdom of an old man is worth taking
Almost 100 years in the making
Pretty soon his body will be breaking
There’s nothing he can do

Be careful what you let them whisper to you
Their motivation tells you what you should do
It is such an easy trap you’re walking in to
There’s nothing you can do
Tonight it comes for you

CHORUS

For each and every wolf they cry
1000 more sheep are waiting to die
Death never comes but why
There are no wolves in sight

Don’t be surprised if he looks you in the eye
Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t come tonight
Don’t be surprised if he looks you in the eye
There’s nothing you can do

The Devil is coming to get you in the morning
And there’s nothing you can do

4. TALK TO THE MACHINE
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: SciFi

The album was originally going to be called TALK TO THE MACHINE.

What are all the news sounds in my head
Why does it feel like I am talking to the dead
What are all these new machines
I thought they were to make my life complete

The farmer has died and all the people cried
And a little voice inside said talk to the machine

What is this number on my head
Why does it feel like I have lost my name again
No advantages to this
Not for me but for the one who keeps the list

The market will die and people will cry
And a little voice inside said talk to the machine

What is the new sound in your head
Why does it look like you have never seen a bed
What are all those new lines
They are part of your design

The ground has been replaced and a machine sits in the space
And no none could compete
I heard a voice it tried to speak
Then it grew so weak
To a lifeless speak
The mother tongue of the machine

What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger
What doesn’t love can live no longer
What doesn’t feel can’t give you power
What doesn’t grow dies by the hour
Never let them grab you by the balls
Never let it talk when it calls
Never take away what was meant to be
Never talk to the machine

5. SONG WORTH SINGING
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Drama

If I had a song worth singing I'd sing it right to you
I’d take my favourite chords and put them in a bar or two
I’d make the words come out like nothing you have every heard before
Then I’d find the time to sing some more

If I had a wish worth wishing for I’d want it to come true
Id never tell a soul if that was what I had to do
Id use the shooting star that I see every single night
Careful what I’m wishing for tonight
Tonight

If a had a story worth telling I’d tell it right to you
I’d captivate and reel you in and make it all seem true
I’d use the wish and use the song so the story sells it self
This story was better left up on a shelf on a shelf

Oh and if I had some shit worth selling I'd sell it right to you
I’d make my presentation something you could not refuse
I’d make you thing as though it was something that you really need
If you were dry I could still make you bleed

If I had a song worth singing I would sing it right to you
I’d take my favourite chords and put them in a bar or two
I’d make the melody like nothing you have every heard before
Then I’d find the time to sing some more
Then I’d find the time to sing some more
Forget the words and ill just play the chords

6. THE STAIRCASE

© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Buddy Drama
Featuring Tomi Swick / Vocals
Kevin Tarlton & Norm Quesnel / Backing Vocals

This song was written in 2006 when the Staircase Theatre closed it's doors.

There’s a place I know well and it’s closing it’s doors
Where poets in waiting won’t speak anymore
The yellow brick walls held canvas up high
The stories they told are now are now memories inside

There’s somebody laughing from behind a door
It’s a new group of my friends I have not heard before
Cutting their teeth on those who’ll let them bite
It feels like the start of something bigger tonight

I’ll have a coffee and a drink for my friend
We’ll be at the table just around the bend
Please flash the lights when the movie begins
I’ll give you a tip when I’m leaving

Someone is singing I’ve never heard before
She’s cute as a button with an angels voice
I think she’ll go far if she plays her cards right
It’s too bad I’m the only one listening tonight

Maybe it’s better to leave something behind
A memory stays in a place you can find
Maybe someday I’ll see you again
Or maybe this is the end

CHORUS

Young lovers are kissing in the mezzanine
A lady is dancing to some gypsy thing
The DJ is mixing some young with some old
This place once kept the city wired, I’m told

I had a last coffee and I drank with my friend
I talked to the waitress and I kissed here hand
I thanked her for all the work she had done
And I walked away with a song

Thanks for the coffee and thanks for my friend
Thanks for the table that I helped break in
All the good movies must come to an end

So thanks for a song I believe in.

7. WHERE BRIDGES LAY
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Drama
This was the first song recorded back in 2007

You’ve got me thinking of a simple time
A piece of land would be mine
And I would grow you all the flowers you desire
And then the wind would blow bringing on the fire

You’ve got me thinking of a
A little field to ease my mind
And I would grow you all the flavours you desire
And then the wind would blow bringing on the fire

Why are we running for tomorrow
We’ll just find more of the same
Why are we burning all our bridges
Do we not know where bridges lay

You’ve got me thinking of a history
A way of doing what was done
And I would keep all the traditions you desire

You’ve got me thinking of a family
A way to carry on the line
And I would grow them all the trees that they desire
And then the wind would blow bringing on the fire

CHORUS
SOLO
CHORUS

8. DEATH TO ME
©Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Thriller
Based on a true event that happened to me on the Hamilton escarpment (90s era).
Stylistically, this is my "St. James
Infirmary", which is one of the earliest songs I remember my Grandfather playing for me.

I went to the mountain to have a look around
I went to the mountain to have a look around
And boy did I find something, six foot hole in the ground

I went back the next morning there was no body to be found
I went back the next morning there was no body around
Just a small red handle on a shovel in the ground

Called the police on the phone said can I show you what I found
Called the police on the phone said can I show you what I found
Wasn’t five minutes later and that car had come around

So I took him to the mountain and I showed him what I found
I took him to the mountain and he barely made a sound
But he said son this hole they’re diggin is for layin bodies down

Son if you go back tomorrow here’s my number night and day
If you see something strange oh don’t you hesitate
I went back a week later the rain had washed that hole away

If you want to go tomorrow try to find the sickle tree
If you want to go tomorrow try to find the sickle tree
It may not look like much to you but it looks like death to me

SOLO

There’s more to the story but the rest I just can’t tell
There’s more to the story that the devil knows as well
If I take you down this road it’ll lead you straight to hell

9. BRACE FOR WINTER
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Drama
Featuring Lisa Winn / vocals

I feel the summer come and go
I watch the colours fall below
And we’ll be there

Feel like the time to buy new jeans
Feel’s like the way it’s always been
We’re always there

It’s time to clean out the shed
Make room for the flower bed

Something winter is on the way
Even though they just will not say
Unpack your sweaters my dear
This may be like no other year
Brace for winter
Brace for winter

I feel the spring coming on
Seems like we made it through the storm
But this is only one year

The springtime brings the scented air
The summer brings a beautiful woman
I need you here

Even though the sky is clear
Don’t take it for granted my dear

CHORUS

There is an old box full of clothes
My favourite mittens full of holes
I’ll leave them there

There is an old box full of clothes
My favourite jeans are full of holes
But they still wear

SOLO

Oh don’t believe what you hear
They only entertain my dear

Sleeping through the winter feels right
I feel like staying home tonight

CHORUS

10. TURN IT ON
© Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Drama
Originally written for the 2015 "Turn It On" Juno contest in Hamilton.
My song didn't make the announced top 25, but I liked it and wanted to share it.
Stylistically, this is about anyone getting into the daily grind. Starts slow, the morning sunrise reveals the city and you go to it, and you don't stop.
Somewhere in there, you find something that love and that keeps you grounded and authentic.

Here I stand at the lake
All my strengths my mistakes
On the hill all alone
This is what I call home
I know these streets
This is where I cut my teeth

See the sun coming up
In the light you don’t look so tough
But your strong and your wise
Take some time to realize

That some things are worth fighting for
Some times you leave things at the door
You take only what you need

Some things are worth dying for
Some things you just leave on the floor
Some things are gonna make you bleed

Turn it up Turn it on Turn it up    Turn it On
Hamilton is in my blood x 4

So come on turn it on x 4

Turn it on
Turn it on

11. JUST SWING
©Nathan Fleet
Movie Genre: Musical
Find that one little thing that makes you happy, and do it.
Stylistically, I always loved fast big-band stuff and Gypsy Jazz. This is my small contribution to that.

Well most of the time I haven’t got that much to say
I can never find the right words but I may have found a way
Oh nothing that I say is worth a reward
That is why I always leave my nametag by the door

So if you’ve got the time baby I’ve got the way
And if you’ve got the way I know a secret little place
If you don’t know what to bring Just Swing

Well I’ve been surrounded by every noise in town
There is only one place where I truly love the sound
And most of my actions speak louder than words
When I make my move why don’t you tell me what you’ve heard

So if you’ve got the time baby I’ve got the way
And if you’ve got the way I know a secret little place
If you don’t know what to bring Just Swing

SOLO

So if you’ve got the time baby I’ve got the way
And if you’ve got the way I know a secret little place
If you don’t know what to bring
If you don’t know how to sing
If you don’t know what to bring Just Swing

Yep

12. BLAME IT ON MY GUITAR
©Nathan Fleet
 Movie Genre:  Rockumentary
What else can I say, this song is my life.
If you combined the Ramones and Chuck Berry...well, you still get the Ramones.
This is my those.

Well I stay up almost every night and
Something about that feels so right
When the morning comes the sun burns me like a star
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar

Oh something about her sings to me
There is no other place I would rather be
I don’t need a big house I don’t need a fancy car
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar

You can blame, blame, it on my guitar
You can blame, blame, it on my guitar
You can blame, blame, it on my guitar
You can blame, blame, it on my guitar
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar, wooo

Don’t call the doctor there ain’t nothin’ wrong
But I can feel something coming on
I know it wont bleed but it just might leave a scar
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar

When I cant find the words to say
There really is no other way
When I don’t speak you might find that bizarre
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar

CHORUS

Try to blame the drums try to blame the saxophone
You try to blame the bass try to blame the trombone
You try to blame the keys try to blame the superstar
But you can blame it, blame it on my guitar

They said take a walk to the barber shop
Cus your hair’s too long but I didn’t stop
You should always be the person that you are
You can blame it, blame it on my guitar

SOLO
CHORUS
